Mirzapur(or Meerjapur)is a city of mythological importance and has been mentioned in Hindu "Granthas" like "Devi Bhaagwat","Markandeya Puraan"," Durga Spatashati"etc.

Situated on the banks of River Ganges,this city is on the Delhi-Hawrah line.Nearest Airports are Varanasi(65 Kms.)and Allahabad(110 Kms.)The Chief industries are Carpet weaving and Brass utensils manufacturing.Mirzapur is gifted by nature with immense scenic beauty.


The various tourist spots in the region are Bindham fall, lower Khajuri dam, upper khajuri dam, Siddhanaath ki Dari, Tanda fall,Sirsi Dam, chunaar fort etc.

The religious places include Vindhyachal temple, Ashta bhuja temple, Kaali Khoh, Shivpur's Shiv temple, Raam Gaya Ghat, Budhey Naath Mandir,Lohndi Mahaveer temple, Kankaal Kaali temple etc.

The name of the city seems to be an Urdu term, but Meerjapur is a Hindi term(MEER=Sea/Saagar/Sindhu, Ja=Daughter/putri,[Means Laxmi,the godess of wealth] and Pur=Home/Nagar) Hence, the name of the city means "House of Laxmi".During the Moughal period, the name got an Urdu accent and was mis-spelt as Mirzapur.

The ancient city was famous for The business of Lac, and Chapra(Used in the paint industry).The people are friendly, and the city has a population of around 5 lakhs.
